Rhinoplasty facts

The nose should be one thing above all: inconspicuous. An unattractive nose distracts from the eyes – this impairs personal charisma. In contrast, a beautiful nose creates a harmonious image and emphasizes femininity or masculinity.

Dr. Muggenthaler gives your nose a harmonious shape that looks good and does not stand out as being operated on. The result is natural because Dr. Muggenthaler, as an experienced facial surgeon, knows which shape fits your face perfectly. In addition to a harmonious shape, the nose should of course also function perfectly as a respiratory organ. If possible, we also carry out a corresponding correction in this respect or consult other specialists.
At our clinic, we place particular emphasis on a comprehensive consultation to determine your future appearance together with you.

Before and after

In Germany, it is not permitted to show before and after pictures of medical treatments. We are therefore unable to present any before and after pictures of our treatments here. If you are interested in before and after pictures, please contact us. We will show you some examples and will be happy to explain the prospects of success and the potential effect of the corresponding treatment in your specific case during a non-binding consultation.

Treatment procedure

If you are interested in a nose operation, you can first get detailed advice from Dr. Muggenthaler in a consultation. You explain to him what bothers you about your nose – you are also welcome to bring photos of noses that you personally like.

Before a nose operation, Dr. Muggenthaler will work with you to analyze how your nose fits into your face and whether it is functioning properly. Once your wishes have been precisely defined, a computer simulation of what your nose could look like after the correction is carried out. Of course, this is not a 100% prediction of the result, but it comes very close. We will give you a printout of the simulation to take home with you or send it to you by e-mail. This allows you to view the image again at your leisure. You may also want to show it to your family or friends to hear their opinion.

Preparation for a nasal correction

The recovery and aftercare phase is crucial for the success of the treatment and the rhinoplasty operation – sufficient time should be allowed for this. In most cases, a clearly visible bandage must be worn until one week after the procedure. Plaster strips are then applied for a further five to seven days to accelerate the reduction of the swelling. It is necessary to protect the nose from impacts and external influences for a further four weeks. Sporting activities are therefore only possible to a limited extent. Depending on your state of health, it will be determined which preliminary examinations (e.g. blood test or ECG) are necessary. During the consultation, we will tell you which medication you can take regularly. Avoid alcohol and nicotine consumption during the day and in any case the evening before the operation.

Planning on the computer

With the help of the computer simulation, the patient can see the result of the rhinoplasty very clearly in advance. Together with the patient, the shape of the nose is analyzed on the screen and possible changes are simulated and discussed. This makes it easier to decide on an operation and ensures greater precision when carrying out the treatment.

Nose surgery

We work with micro instruments that are extremely gentle on the soft tissue. This guarantees that the operation is as gentle as possible.

The nose operation

The procedure itself takes about 1 to 2 hours and is performed under general anesthesia in the presence of a specialist anesthesiologist. During rhinoplasty, small incisions are made directly behind the nasal opening so that no scars are visible later. Through these incisions it is possible to visualize the cartilaginous and bony nasal framework, whereupon the necessary corrections can be made. The bony nasal bone is also often adapted to the new shape, which can be accompanied by swelling and discoloration in the cheek and outer areas. During surgery, if possible, all necessary changes to the nasal framework are carried out from the inside through the nostrils (closed method). Therefore, no external scars are visible later. For extensive corrections in the area of the tip of the nose, a small incision is required on the bridge of the nose (open method), which is virtually invisible later on.

All incisions in the nose are closed with self-dissolving stitches, which make later removal unnecessary. At the end of the procedure, a special dressing is applied and a nasal tamponade is inserted.

Aftercare

To reduce swelling to a minimum, the eye and cheek area is cooled immediately after the operation. No pain is to be expected. In most cases, the nasal packing is removed a few hours after the operation so that unhindered breathing through the nose is guaranteed. The day after the operation, the inside of the nose is cleaned. A healing ointment is applied to accelerate the loosening of the blood crust. After a week, the nasal dressing is removed and replaced with skin plaster strips, which should be worn for a further five to seven days. From this point at the latest, the nose looks completely inconspicuous. However, the healing of the bony change takes about another four weeks. Special care is important during this time. However, it takes a longer period of time for all wounds to heal completely and for the remaining swelling to subside. Only after about six months is the nose perceived as completely natural and has then attained its final shape.

Fundamentals

The external shape and function of the nose must be considered separately. Disharmony is often associated with poor nasal function. For example, an enlarged nasal septum or oversized turbinates obstruct nasal breathing. In this case, the correction of the external nose shape must be combined with a functional correction of the inside of the nose. The costs may then be covered by health insurance.
