The nasolabial fold is a typical expression line that runs on both sides between the corner of the mouth and the wing of the nose. Although this wrinkle is also caused by a lot of laughing, it makes our facial expression look serious and grim. But we don’t have to give up laughing, because nasolabial folds can be both prevented and treated.
Depending on the initial situation and treatment goal, we have various methods available for treating the nasolabial fold, from laser application to injections.

Injecting hyaluronic acid into the nasolabial fold is certainly the most common and effective method.
Dr. Frank Muggenthaler
The nasolabial fold is a so-called expression line, just like the frown line or crow’s feet. As the name suggests, it is caused by pronounced facial expressions or the corresponding muscle movements in the face. With increasing age, the expression lines harden and become visible depressions. In addition to facial expressions, the natural ageing process and reduced collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid production are responsible for the formation of wrinkles. We cannot significantly influence causes such as facial expressions, genetics and the ageing process. But external influences such as UV radiation do. It is well known that UV radiation accelerates skin ageing enormously. A good sunscreen is therefore essential.
Highly potent active ingredients and vitamins can slow down the signs of skin ageing and counteract the formation of wrinkles.
The active ingredient “retinol” is particularly valuable for improving skin functions. It stimulates the body’s own collagen and elastin production. Retinol thus improves both the firmness and elasticity of the skin. Products with vitamin C are also suitable. They stimulate collagen synthesis and encourage the skin to build up its own cushion.
The HydraFacial is also ideal for preventing wrinkles.
Immediate help for nasolabial folds is provided by injections with hyaluronic acid. The decisive factor here is the preservation of the natural facial expression. We have various viscosities of hyaluronic acid available for this purpose. Fine wrinkles can be evened out with low-viscosity cross-linked hyaluronic acid. Deeper wrinkles and in particular the nasolabial folds are usually treated with more strongly cross-linked hyaluronic acid. An injection with hyaluronic acid offers stable results for 12 to 18 months.
As a general rule, the earlier the wrinkles are injected with hyaluronic acid, the less likely it is that deeper wrinkles will develop. In the case of the nasolabial fold, the ideal time would be when the first lines appear, even with a relaxed face.
Before the filler treatment, I analyze your face in detail. In addition to wrinkles, the underlying facial expressions and the general proportions of the face are decisive for a natural result. So I don’t just focus on the nasolabial fold, but also on the cheek area. Because if we give the cheek area more volume again, the nasolabial fold will also smooth itself out, depending on the initial situation. This creates a mini-lift, the contours are lifted and the sagging of the midface can be delayed. The top priority is always a natural result.
The hyaluronic acid injection takes approx. 30 minutes, depending on the treatment volume.
The result lasts for approx. 12 to 18 months. The prerequisite for this is the use of high-quality fillers. At Muggenthaler Ästhetik, we rely exclusively on the Restylane product range from the Swiss manufacturer Galderma.
