Enlarged pores

Facts, causes, treatment

Enlarged pores are a common cosmetic problem that affects both women and men. The pores appear enlarged, especially on the nose and cheeks. Which treatments help with large pores and why do they occur in the first place?

Reduce pores

Large pores are often caused by blocked sebaceous glands. If you want a fine complexion, there are a number of preventative measures you can take. This includes consistent facial cleansing, individually tailored skincare products and regular professional deep cleansing of the skin (e.g. with HydraFacial). However, more advanced methods such as laser treatment can also further improve the appearance of the skin.

Large pores can be prevented. The measures start with daily skin care. It is important to know your own skin type and the suitable active ingredients. Well-researched and proven active ingredients for pore refinement include niacinamide, retinol and salicylic acid (BHA).

Causes of enlarged pores

The pores have an important function in our skin. The fat produced in the sebaceous glands is transported to the outside through them. This process is necessary to keep our skin supple and prevent it from drying out. However, if the pore is blocked, the sebum can no longer drain away and the pore continues to expand.

Enlarged pores or clogged pores can have various causes. They can be genetic or caused by free radicals such as UV radiation, air pollution, alcohol, nicotine or an unhealthy diet.

Pore refinement with retinol

Retinol is an active ingredient that has proven particularly effective in refining pores. Studies have shown that with daily use of retinol, wrinkles disappear and pores are refined after just four weeks. Incidentally, retinol is the best-researched anti-ageing active ingredient of all.

Pore refinement with peelings

Peelings are a good way to gently remove dead skin cells and prevent clogged pores. Chemical peelings based on fruit acids or other gentle acids are best. In contrast to mechanical peeling, the skin’s protective barrier is not damaged by chemical peeling. Calluses are loosened and the pores can be intensively cleansed by the fruit acid. The desquamation process is activated and healthy new skin is revealed.

Pore refinement with HydraFacial

Anyone who regularly treats their skin to a professional deep cleansing with HydraFacial® has already done a lot of things right. The sebum deposits are literally “sucked” out of the pores during this application.

Reducing large pores with laser

If the pores are visibly enlarged, we achieve good results with the ResurFX laser. The treatment is not entirely painless, but is well tolerated thanks to the anesthesia (nitrous oxide and air cooling).

Frequently asked questions

Can pores be reduced?

Yes, laser treatment can significantly refine the appearance of the skin.

Laser, peeling or cream? Which treatment is appropriate and when?

If the pores are not yet so enlarged, a retinol treatment, a peeling and/or a HydraFacial® may be useful. If the pores are already very enlarged, we achieve good results with laser treatment.
Which treatment is appropriate must be determined and defined in a personal consultation with the doctor. It often makes sense to combine the methods.

How many laser treatments are necessary to refine the pores?

As a rule, approx. 1-3 treatments are necessary at intervals of 2-4 weeks.
