Frequently asked questions about phenol peeling

Phenol Peel FAQ

Phenol peeling is one of the most effective methods for skin rejuvenation and wrinkle correction. No other procedure is as effective at smoothing even very deep wrinkles and tightening the entire facial skin. As impressive as the rejuvenating effect is, the treatment is complex and time-consuming. Accordingly, our patients have many questions about phenol peeling. We have collected the most common ones and answer them in this article.

What is a phenol peel?

Phenol peeling is an aesthetic dermatological treatment for skin optimization or complete skin renewal. In contrast to superficial or medium-depth peelings, phenol peeling not only reaches the upper layer of the skin, but also the elastic and collagen fibers in the dermis.

Who is the phenol peeling suitable for?

Phenol peeling is an option if the skin has suffered a considerable loss of function due to age-related or external factors. This usually manifests itself in deep wrinkles, pigment changes and loss of skin elasticity. Very good results can also be achieved with cornification disorders (precancerous lesions), pigment spots and (acne) scars. However, if the sole aim is to treat scars, laser treatment or medical needling is preferable to phenol peeling.

The Phenol Peel can be performed on both men and women. Our patients are generally between 45 and 65 years old.

What results can be expected?

The special feature of the Phenol Peel is the comprehensive renewal of the elastic and collagen fibers in depth, which significantly improves the skin’s functional properties. Not only superficial but also deep wrinkles can be greatly reduced or even completely eliminated. In addition, pigment changes and keratinization are also corrected. The natural facial expression remains completely intact.

How long does the result last?

A phenol peel is usually only done once in a lifetime. You benefit from a rejuvenation advantage of 10-15 years, so to speak. To keep it that way, a healthy lifestyle, continued skin care and protection from external influences such as UV rays are of course also important.

How long does a phenol peeling treatment take?

At least 6 weeks before the peeling, a systematic skin conditioning with retinoids and other active ingredients is carried out, which you can do at home under medical supervision. The actual peeling takes about 90 minutes. The subsequent hospital stay is 1 to 7 nights.

Is there any downtime after the Phenol Peel?

Yes, a downtime of at least 2 weeks must be expected. Although the skin is still red, it can be concealed with make-up. After 6 to 8 weeks, most of the redness has completely disappeared.

What needs to be considered after phenol peeling?

In the first 7 Strong facial expressions should be avoided if possible for several days after the treatment. We recommend a hospital stay of at least 2-4 days so that you can rest optimally. However, some patients also stay with us in the clinic for up to 8 days. . During the first 3 months after phenol peeling, you must avoid strong UV exposure and apply a high sun protection factor.

Can the Phenol Peel be performed on an outpatient basis?

In which cases should phenol peeling not be carried out?

  • Herpes infections
  • Active skin rash
  • Restrictions on heart, liver or kidney function
  • Diabetes
  • Pregnancy
  • Dark skin types

Is phenol peeling painful?

The treatment itself is not painful thanks to local anesthesia and mild sedatives. However, pain may occur in the first 4 hours after treatment, requiring stronger painkillers. Special cooling devices also help to relieve pain. After 24 hours there is usually no significant pain.

Can complications or side effects occur?

Phenol peeling is a strong peeling application that should only be carried out by experienced doctors in order to rule out complications as far as possible. The correct pre- and post-treatment of the skin plays a key role here. In rare cases, however, scars may occur that require appropriate aftercare. Longer-lasting redness and light or dark pigment changes are also possible, but can usually be treated well.

Can the neck also be rejuvenated with a phenol peel?

No, the phenol peeling can only be used on the face. Other treatments such as radiofrequency needling or the LaseMDTM treatment are suitable for skin rejuvenation on the neck or décolleté. A neck lift can also be performed as part of a surgical facelift.
