The facts

Botulinum toxin is an active ingredient that can be used to specifically weaken mimic muscles and thus eliminate certain unwanted wrinkles. In particular, the vertical wrinkles between the eyebrows (frown lines), the radial wrinkles to the side of the eyes (crow’s feet) and the transverse wrinkles on the forehead. However, other wrinkles, such as those on the sides below the nose, on the lower eyelid, on the cheeks and corners of the mouth, as well as on the neck, can also be treated with botulinum toxin.

Rare complications
Headache, bruising, temporary disturbing weakening of mimic muscles, feeling of weakness for a few days (very rare)

Botulinum toxin expert

Dr. Dr. Muggenthaler has a long and extensive experience in the use of botulinum toxin. As a facial surgeon, he knows the anatomy and the interplay of all mimic muscles inside out. As an esthete, he has a clear idea of the ideal facial proportions. These are the basics of successful application with botulinum toxin.

Before and after

In Germany, it is not permitted to show before and after pictures of medical treatments. We are therefore unable to present any before and after pictures of our treatments here. If you are interested in before and after pictures, please contact us. We will show you some examples and will be happy to explain the prospects of success and the potential effect of the corresponding treatment in your specific case during a non-binding consultation.

Treatment procedure

Before the treatment

Botox (botulinum toxin) treatment begins with a detailed analysis of the face. In addition to wrinkles, the underlying facial expressions and the general proportions of the face are decisive for a natural facial expression. As all mimic muscles of the face are indirectly connected to each other, a weakening in one area very often has an effect on distant areas of the face. We take this into account during the in-depth analysis and discuss your wishes and the available options with you. Botox treatment is suitable for both young and older patients.

Treatment and aftercare

The points where the muscles are to be weakened are marked according to the facial analysis. This is documented photographically so that the exact connection between treatment and effect can be established later. Botulinum toxin is injected with a very fine needle. The pain from the injection is minimal, so that a local anesthetic is not necessary. Occasionally, a circumscribed bruise may occur at the injection site. The effect sets in after two to three days, although the maximum effect is only noticeable after about two weeks. As a result of the weakening of facial expressions, wrinkles are permanently smoothed out.

The success of the treatment lasts for about four to six months. Treatments with botulinum toxin can be repeated as often as required.

Mode of action of botulinum toxin

The active ingredient botulinum toxin is secreted by a bacterium (clostridium botolinum) and isolated in complex purification steps. Botulinum toxin prevents the transmission of excitation from the nerve endings to the muscle fibers. This results in a circumscribed paralysis. This relaxes the muscles in the facial area and smoothes wrinkles. After about four to six months, the body restores the original function of transmitting excitation and facial expressions return.

As the majority of facial wrinkles are caused by facial expressions, many wrinkles can be specifically removed or reduced with Botox treatment. Particularly harmonious and long-lasting results can be achieved by combining it with additional wrinkle fillers (e.g. hyaluronic acid). After about four to six months, the body “repairs” the interruption in arousal and normal muscle contractions slowly resume.

Frequently asked questions about Botox treatment

Which wrinkles can be corrected with botulinum toxin?

Botox treatment is very effective in reducing the “frown lines” between the eyebrows and the “crow’s feet” at the sides of the eyes. Transverse forehead wrinkles can also be smoothed out well. Wrinkles under the eyes, on the cheeks, the corners of the mouth and on the neck can also be corrected.

How high is the risk of facial paralysis?

Minimal if the doctor has sufficient experience.

Is there any long-term experience with botulinum toxin?

Botulinum toxin has been used as a medication for over 20 years. Since then, the mode of action has been documented in great detail.

Is the Botox treatment painful?

Botox treatment uses very fine needles that cause hardly any pain.

When will we see the result?

The effect becomes apparent after approx. 5 – 10 days.

How long does the result last?

Usually 4-6 months.

Can botulinum toxin treatments be repeated as often as required?

A restriction is not yet known.

How does the body react to repeated botulinum toxin treatments?

The treated muscles become weaker and weaker, making the results better and longer lasting.

Can Botox treatment be combined with other treatments?

To smooth out wrinkles, a combined treatment with hyaluronic acid is also carried out to better smooth out wrinkles.

Can botulinum toxin be used to treat sweating?

Yes. Botulinum toxin can be used to safely and specifically eliminate unwanted perspiration.

Does botulinum toxin help with headaches?

In around half of migraine patients, the pain disappears or is at least alleviated after treatment. In these cases, the costs may also be covered by health insurance.

What do I need to consider after a Botox treatment?

The affected areas should not be massaged and excessive sweating should be avoided on the day of treatment. There are no other restrictions.
